The technical processes of printmaking are unlike most other art forms with the majority of the creative process happening before ink ever touches paper. Even after all that planning, with all of the specific skills and equipment, the outcome can be varied by the way you pull the print.
In this show, we invite the viewer in for closer looking to appreciate the nuances which make this art form so unique; ultimately to understand why each print is an original in its’ own right.
The beauty of printmaking is the ability to create multiple originals. We asked artists to create their work so we could hang 2 of “the same” prints side by side so that the viewer gets to compare the distinctions.
What you will view are 2 impressions from the same plate but reflecting distinct differences. It might be an etching inked with different colors. It might have hand painted or collage elements. It might be one you consider final and one that is an artist’s proof. It might be the first pull from a monoprint and the ghost image. It might be reduction woodcut at one of the stages when there’s no turning back. It might show a registration difference. Our jurors looked for two of “the same” that are “not the same” – any part of the working process or final results which artists pulled 2 very different prints from the same plate.
Yes, 1st impressions matter. So do 2nd Impressions.
Our primary focus honors traditional hand pulled printmaking techniques. These include relief, intaglio, silkscreen, lithography, monotype, and photopolymer plate (i.e. Solarplates). Innovative approaches in contemporary printmaking (digital) were considered as long as traditional print methods were still the primary technique.
