ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Lawrence Jolly is an accomplished studio artist who lives and works in Round Rock Texas. As the former owner of iconic Austin graphic design firm, Jolly Design and graduate of UT/Austin with a BFA in design, Lawrence is the recipient of the 2016 City of Austin Peoples Choice Award, Austin ArtBoards winner, and subject of numerous other shows, exhibits and accolades. His work connects through visual allegory our spiritual and natural selves in richly rendered medium- and large-format oil paintings and mixed media dimensional pieces. His studies of children and adults situated in ethereal environmental settings reflect the humanism of Caravaggio and Rockwell combined with the whimsy of Dali in a completely unique and energetic contemporary realist style. His work can be seen and purchased at www.lawrencejolly.com.

“I am a Contemporary Narrative Realist, a visual story-teller in the traditions of Rockwell and Dali. My artwork and the creative process that attend it is inspired by the belief that there is an infinite Creator, and through whose grace I am also able to create. I like using common materials and ordinary subject matter to convey uncommon and extraordinary concepts. In my paintings they are the things that define the connection between humanity and divinity: emotion, curiosity, wonderment, innocence, desire, freedom, love and joy…and also pain, suffering, guilt and loss. I want my art to surprise and delight, and for viewers to see in the expressions of our common experience things of innate beauty. It’s these experiences of the human soul which connect us, and by sharing them through my art, I hope to help heal in a small way the disunity and mistrust that has come to characterize too much of our society today.”
With an Associates Degree in Graphic Design, and a BFA from The University of Texas, Jolly worked with some of the top artists in in Texas, including Charles Umlaut, David Demming, Ed Triggs, and others. He has a long history of teaching and mentorship in the commercial and fine arts. His 30 year career as a professional designer allowed him to lead and mentor dozens of very talented creative professionals, many of whom have gone on to establish successful practices and companies of their own. He has taught advanced design on the collegiate level, and painting classes in Georgetown and Round Rock. Jolly has also curated and judged numerous art exhibits, including the Georgetown Art Hop and Round Rock Arts.
