Round Rock Arts is proud to be accepting entries for a juried exhibit featuring FIBER ARTS. We look forward to showcasing a wide range of contemporary and innovative works where fiber is the primary medium. Creative definitions of “fiber” are welcome! Traditional forms such as fabric, yarn, basket weaving, macrame, embroidery, and knitting are acceptable, as well as newer definitions using plant and animal fibers.

This exhibit will be located in the expansive gallery at Texas State University Round Rock Campus, Avery Building (1555 University Blvd., Round Rock, TX). 

Submission fee: $30 per artist, for up to 3 entries

Prizes to be awarded: Best of Show $100, 1st Place $50, and 2nd place $25

Important dates:

Call deadline: 12/19/22 @5pm

Artist notification: 12/27/22

Drop off work: 1/10/23, 10am-12pm

Show dates: 1/17/23 – 3/24/23

Reception: 2/3/23, 6-8pm

Pick up work:3/25/23, 10am-12pm

Artist rules and regulations: 

• The majority of the art piece must be fiber. 
• We accept only original works, created by the artist/entrant. Art from a class, pattern, or kit is not acceptable.
• Wearable art is not accepted.
• Do not submit work that has been displayed in a previous Round Rock Arts exhibit in the previous 2 years.
• Only submit work that is available to exhibit. Do not submit the same piece to multiple venues for the same dates. 
• Art must remain at the exhibit for the entirety of the show. Early removal is not permitted. 
• Entrants must be at least 16 years old at delivery of artwork. Parental consent required for artists under 18.
• Artwork must be hand delivered. (It may NOT be mailed or shipped.) No storage, either before drop-off dates or after pick-up dates, is available. Shipped art will be rejected at delivery.
• Art must be family friendly, as it will be displayed in a public space.
• Selected artists must agree to the Artist Agreement and Waiver of Liability.

Display Guidelines:

Quilts and similar: Quilts must have a sleeve with a rod or slat for hanging. Most pieces will have to hang from one hook. TXST has a limited number of wires w/hooks. Very wide quilts will be able to hang with two hooks. Please state your hook requirements in the form. The curators will take that information into consideration during the selection process. Quilts do not require D-rings, but need to have hardware that works with a hook. Maximum of 6’ width by 8’ height.

2D requirements: Framed works must have gallery wrapped wire and D-rings. Saw-tooth hangers are not allowed. If the art piece has special requirements for display, the artist must supply clear instructions along with the display forms, rods, or implements for the gallery to use. Max. 6′ width by 8’ height . 3D requirements:

For the glass display case, max. size is 18″ and max. weight is 20lbs.

For standalone pieces, max of 100lbs (including the pedestal, provided by the artist).

Larger pieces cannot exceed 5′ on the largest side (including pedestal, provided by artist).

Drop-off

Any artwork that is not ready to hang or does not follow the guidelines will be rejected.

Please bring plastic that you can lay your piece on before it is hung, if necessary. The plastic will not be returned to you.

Accepted artwork must be dropped off at the time listed. No early or late drop-off appointments are accepted.

Artwork must be labeled on the back with: Artist’s name, contact info, title of work, price (or “not for sale” if appropriate)

Info needed to apply: 

Please have the following info ready to submit your work in the Application Form:

• Title of work
• Media used
• Size: Height x Length x Depth + Weight
• Any special hanging requirements (please see rules and guidelines for expectations)

• Is your art for sale? What is the dollar amount?
• Percentage to Round Rock Arts, minimum of 25%
• Upload a JPG file (1 for each submission): no more than 5MB. This is used for juror decisions and then, for social media. Provide the best you have!

Electronic submission procedures

• Please read the entry form carefully before filling in. All accepted entries will stay as-is and cannot be changed or corrected after submission.
• Label your photo file with and ARTWORK TITLE _YOUR LAST NAME: for example: Starry_Night_VanGogh.jpg
• Formats accepted: jpeg, png, or gif. Max = 5 MB per image.
• Each artist may submit 1, 2, or 3 images for $30.
• Complete the Artist Information and Waiver of Liability.

Sales

Because we do not have a sales commission, we kindly ask artists to donate 25% of SOLD WORK to RRA (indicate your willingness to donate on submission form). We truly appreciate your donation. 

At TXST, because no one is there to monitor the show, we will have signage that says to contact the artist to transact a sale of the art in the exhibit. It is up to the artist to make the sale, collect the sales tax, make the donation to Round Rock Arts (if you indicated to do so), and schedule an exchange of the art piece with the collector after the exhibition is closed. The artist is expected to report income to the IRS. RRA is not liable for any unpaid income taxes.

If sold:

• A buyer may not pick up the work until art pick up date/time as stated in the call.
• The buyer is expected to pick up the work at the pick up day and times OR the artist will need to make other arrangements between buyer and artist.

Parking at Texas State University Round Rock Campus: 

Monday through Friday you must purchase a $5 parking pass at the parking kiosk or through the app. 

Weekend parking is free and open Saturday 8am-3pm and Sunday 1pm-7pm.

Meet our jurors: 

Dr. Cheryl Christian works in multiple media, including fiber art, and has won several awards for her work. She is a juried member of Fiber Forum, an independent curator, and editor emerita of Needle Arts, which she edited and produced for more than fourteen years. A certified master judge, Christian has juried and judged local, regional, national, and international exhibitions and has exhibited her work locally and nationally. Christian also lectures and conducts workshops on mixed media, judging, appraising, marketing for artists, historic needlework, and contemporary fiber art.

Gerald Tobola is a copper repoussé artist. He considers himself to be a realist artist. His passion for nature inspires him to create art that can satisfy his thirst for nature’s beauty. “As I create my work, I want the result to look as real as possible. In order to achieve that, I focus on textures, shapes, colors and the repoussé and chasing techniques to create my work.” He uses an array of acids and metal coatings to achieve the colors through the oxidation process. His hope is that art appreciators will get as much enjoyment from his artwork, as he does creating it.

Art showings: The Smithsonian Institute Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage – Washington, DC, The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft – Artist in Residence,  Steven Smith Art Gallery – Topeka, Kansas, Winner – American Craft Week – Outstanding American Artist.

Art judge and juror: Judged Numerous Art Shows – Most recent was the Gourd and Fiber Show at the Kerr Center in Kerrville, Texas

Gallery Co- Owner – Copper Shade Tree Art Gallery (2006 – 2021)

Debbie Tobola was a co-founder and co-owner of Copper Shade Tree Art Gallery in Round Top, Texas for 15 years. During that time she facilitated over 1000 exhibiting artists. Additionally, she was the juror and judge for over 50 art shows that were promoted in the gallery. The “Art in Fiber” shows were the number one exhibition (25 shows) during the life of the gallery, which reached national recognition. Over the years, she taught artists how to prepare their artwork for galleries and exhibitions, to make their work more desirable for the art collectors. Debbie is also a judge for numerous art shows in the state. The most recent was the Gourd and Fiber Show at the Kerr Center in Kerrville, Texas. She facilitated the first all male quilt show in Texas, at the CST gallery. Today, Debbie facilitates and promotes her husband, Gerald Tobola’s copper artwork for shows throughout the nation.

ARTIST AGREEMENT & WAIVER OF LIABILITY

Originality: In consideration of the opportunity to display my work to the public, and other good and valuable consideration, the adequacy and sufficiency of which is hereby acknowledged, I, the undersigned artist, certify that the art that I am submitting is my original art and that I am the author and creator of such art. I acknowledge that Round Rock Arts (RRA) reserves the right to accept or deny any submission with or without cause.

Promotion and Publicity: I grant RRA permission to publish in all media my name, artwork, and location for use in promotion through print media, television, and the internet. I further allow RRA to release such information to other persons and entities. My name will be attributed to my pieces that are shown by RRA or other persons or entities.

Responsibility: I understand that RRA and its partner gallery sponsors do not assume responsibility for loss or damage to my artwork(s) or the loss or damage to frames or glass, no matter how sustained. Reasonable safety and electronic security precautions are in place to ensure added protection of my work. I also understand that RRA strongly recommends that I carry my own personal property insurance. Current partners include Williamson County Jester Annex, the city of Round Rock (The Downtowner Gallery), and Texas State University Round Rock Campus. Artwork remains in the gallery until the end of the exhibit: I understand that if my artwork is accepted for the show that the work may not be removed from the exhibition until the pick up date described in the Call for Art. It is my responsibility to notify RRA in writing or by email of a third-party pick-up of artwork at the conclusion of the exhibition. Artwork accepted by the judges, if sold prior to the exhibit, must be placed in the show. Replacement pieces are not accepted.

Sales of Artwork: all sales transactions and the collection and filing of applicable sales tax.

I acknowledge that I have read and understand all terms contained in the description for this Call for Art and the Artist Agreement, and agree to be bound by the terms and stated expectations.

Waiver of Liability: Once I submit this form electronically or by paper copy, I (the artist), my heirs, successors, and assigns, shall indemnify and hold the RRA and appointed officers, volunteers, employees harmless from any and all claims, costs and liabilities for any artwork damage, personal injury, death, or other property damage which is the result of handling and displaying the artwork at The Downtowner Gallery, Williamson County Jester Annex, or Texas State University Round Rock Campus. Our partners’ employees or contractors are likewise held harmless from any and all claims from the artist, heirs, successors or assigns from any artwork damage, personal injury, death, or other property damage, and related costs and liabilities, which is the result of handling and displaying the artwork.
